Teddy Bears and hot dogs were the order of the day for paediatric patients and their families at Children’s Hospital, London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) on Wednesday (June 13).
The occasion was the 20th annual Teddy Bear Picnic, a fun-filled event put on by volunteers, community sponsors, staff and physicians at Children’s Hospital.
Held in the LHSC atrium, an estimated 600 patients, family and staff participated in the event which featured a number of activities ranging from making their own teddy bears, face painting, games, a raffle table and live entertainment in addition to a barbecue lunch.
Monica Dawe was one of the event organizers. Thanking the Children’s Health Foundation and all the donors and volunteers that helped the make the day happen, Dawe summed up the reason for the event quite simply. “It is just a day for the kids to come out, have fun and forget about being sick.”
Attending the Teddy Bear Picnic for the first time, Shakira Evans wasn’t quite sure what to expect. There with her stepmom Courtney, brother Jordan and Nana Betty, her enthusiasm was hard to hide. When asked what she thought it would be like, Evans said, “I don’t know. But I didn’t think it would be this amazing.”
