C. difficile outbreak over at Victoria Hospital

London Community News

The C. difficile outbreak at London Health Sciences Centre (lHSC) Victoria Hospital is now over. Announced on July 6, the outbreak was declared after five patients were diagnosed with the infection. According to a release issued by the LHSC on Tuesday (July 31), new processes, such as molecular testing who show symptoms of C. difficile including diarrhea or abdominal pain, will soon be put into place to help reduce recurrences. “This new method provides quicker results,” said Dr. Michael John, medical director of Infection Prevention and Control. “It confirms the disease within two to three hours, compared to the one to three days sometimes required using traditional lab testing.” Quicker identification of C. difficile in symptomatic patients will ensure they are placed on special precautions earlier, thus reducing spread to other patients.
