Court security costs uploaded to province from municipalities

Court security costs are being uploaded to the province from Ontario municipalities this year, which will join the social assistance programs that were transferred late January.
The previous uploads, which included the Ontario Drug Benefit Program, Ontario Disability Support Program and Ontario Works, resulted in a total benefit of $1.2 billion to municipalities — $45 million of that was transferred to the province from the City of London alone.
Kathleen Wynne, Municipal Affairs and Housing minister, said the uploads are an important step to build stronger, healthier communities for the next generation.
“These uploads are strengthening municipalities by giving more support for local services like affordable housing, transit and child care,” she said in a press release.
This move was done to help municipalities lower, freeze or minimize property taxes and ensure that more tax dollars are available for priorities like water treatment, infrastructure, economic development and community services.
