Purdy’s Chocolates is a Canadian owned and family operated business that is the second largest chocolate retailer in Canada, with 59 stores in British Columbia, Alberta and Ontario.
While many people would consider those impressive statistics, Dwayne Howard had less statistical reasons for grabbing the first spot in line on Saturday (Sept. 1) for the grand opening of the new Purdy’s location in White Oaks Mall. Yes, Howard knows some of the London team and wanted to show support for the mall he lives close to, but his reason for lining up is just what operators of the new London outlet — the company’s 12th store in Ontario — are hoping to hear.
“We had tried some samples and I was hooked right away,” Howard said. “I wanted to come out first thing. It is a great looking store, great colours, and I am here to support a local business. And the chocolate is really good.”
Deborah Narine is store manger for the new White Oaks location and said customers will have a great deal to be excited about. “This is a 100 per cent Canadian business, we don’t use preservatives, those are things people can get excited about.”
Peter Blanchet, Purdy’s master chocolatier, said the move to London was one the company had been planning for a while now. All it needed, he said, was the right opportunity.
“A lot of people know us from Western Canada, a lot in the Toronto area. So we have been looking at London for a number of years. It was just finding the right spot, a prime location,” Blanchet said. “This was that right location. It is a great spot in a great mall. We are very excited.”
