Flu outbreak declared in three care units at St. Joseph’s Parkwood Hospital

London Community News

Three care units at St. Joseph’s Parkwood Hospital currently have influenza outbreaks: 5AN/5AE Geriatric and Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation, 4 Bruce/Elgin Veterans Care and the Transitional Care Unit.

An influenza outbreak at Mount Hope Centre for Long Term Care has just ended.

“Influenza is a serious illness that can have devastating consequences — particularly to the young, the old, and to people living with chronic health conditions,” said Dr. Gillian Kernaghan, St. Joseph’s president and CEO, in a news release. “That is why we have stringent precautions in place to minimize the spread of influenza.”

While staff members are doing their utmost to combat the spread of influenza, they do need visitors and family members to help by:

• Not visiting if feeling unwell;

• Getting the flu shot;

• Washing hands with hand sanitizer;

• Before entering the hospital, the care unit, and the patient’s room;

• When leaving patient’s room and the hospital;

• After coughing, sneezing or blowing nose;

• Coughing or sneezing into sleeve;

•Following these steps when visiting a patient in isolation;

•Not going to other areas of the hospital; and

•Wearing mask, eye protection, gloves and gown.
