Motorcycle rider injured fleeing police (update)

(UPDATE 11:25 a.m.): A 25-year-old man is in hospital after he crashed his motorcycle while fleeing police, according to the province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU).

According to the SIU, London police tried to stop the motorcycle at Wellington Road and Horton Street at about 9:50 p.m. Tuesday night (June 25), but the rider fled south down Wellington.

Shortly thereafter he crashed the bike on High Street just off Wellington, suffering serious injuries. He was transported to London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC).

London Police Service (LPS) and SIU collision reconstruction units had High Street, at Wellington Road and Grand Avenue, taped off Wednesday morning (June 26) as they investigated the single vehicle collision.

“The SIU has assigned three investigators, two forensic investigators and a collision reconstructionist to probe the circumstances of this incident,” a press release said.

The SIU is a civilian law enforcement agency that investigates when police are involved in an event that causes serious injury or death.

London Police Service (LPS) and SIU collision reconstruction units had High Street, at Wellington Road and Grand Avenue, taped off Wednesday morning (June 26) as they investigated the collision.

Technicians were examining a motorcycle about mid-way between the two intersections. According to Const. Ken Steeves the man in hospital was the motorcycle rider.

The SIU is a civilian law enforcement agency that investigates when police are involved in an event that causes serious injury or death.
