Brescia leads in social media with LinkedIn University Pages

Brescia University College is one of the first Canadian universities, and one of the first 200 universities worldwide, to adopt a new social media platform to connect with prospective students, parents and alumnae.

Launched by LinkedIn on Aug. 19, the new University Pages give universities the opportunity to share photo galleries, news and events, program descriptions, notable alumnae, and other key information that students consider while selecting a university. LinkedIn will make University Pages accessible to high school students on Sept. 12.

On the value of this new LinkedIn component as a recruitment tool, registrar Marianne Simm said, “Our LinkedIn Company Page serves faculty, staff, and upper-level students. This new version of LinkedIn, intended for 14- to 18-year-olds, will be a more effective way for us to connect with high school students in Ontario and beyond.”

Having established an early and strong presence on LinkedIn through Brescia’s company page, the Marketing, Communications, and External Relations Department saw this opportunity as a natural step forward in their social media strategy. Brescia was also a higher education leader in connecting with Chinese students through the Chinese social media site Sina Weibo.

Building on this Sina Weibo presence, Brescia web developer Dan Bashaw also created a video translation club this summer to make recruitment videos filmed in English accessible to prospective Chinese students.

Brescia’s ability to stay ahead of trends in social media has also been influenced by their strong Social Media Facilitation Team, led by Sheila Blagrave, director of Communications, Marketing and External Relations.

“Being a small university makes us work nimbly to promote ourselves to external audiences. Social media tools work particularly well to support our communication with new and returning students,” Blagrave said. “Our Social Media Facilitation Team looks forward to building on a solid foundation with our new LinkedIn university page. The page will also make it possible for universities to draw connections between the current careers of graduates and the program of study they completed, thus linking current students and alumnae.”
