Western Fair Arena played host to a flurry of young hockey action this past weekend (Sept. 21 to 23) with the London Jr. Knights AAA Early Bird Tournament taking place.
Fifty teams across four divisions (Minor PeeWee, Major PeeWee, Minor Atom and Major Atom) came out for the annual tourney with some hometown Jr. Knights squads showing some dominance.
The Minor PeeWee’s from London swept their four game round robin to lead the Gold Group before crushing the Huron Perth Lakers 11-4 in the semifinal and then taking down the undefeated Whitby Wildcats in the championship game to a score of 4-2.
The Major Atom Jr. Knights almost matched their older PeeWee counterparts, but lost a 3-1 battle to the Toronto Nationals in the final. The local Atom club dominated in the tournament round robin scoring 20 goals and only allowing five for a perfect 4-0 record.
The Minor Atom Jr. Knights looked like the team to beat headed into the playoffs with a perfect 4-0 record as well in the round robin, but stumbled in the semifinal with a 7-0 loss to the Toronto Titans.
The Major PeeWee team from London led the Gold Group with 2-1-1 record out of the round robin, but couldn’t get past the undefeated Toronto Titans in the semifinal in a 4-3 loss.
