Nationals fall in shootout to Legionnaires

London Community News

The London Nationals handed the Sarnia Legionnaires their first win Wednesday (Sept. 27), dropping a 5-4 loss at Western Fair Arena in a shootout. For the Nats, it’s the team’s first loss in penalty shots on the season, while the Legionnaires have now seen their third overtime in just five games. Last year London saw action in eight sudden death periods, but only went to the shootout three times with two of those ending in defeat. The Nationals couldn’t find much help on the power play Wednesday, having 11 chances to go up a man but only capitalizing once in the third period with Blake Thomas tying the game 3-3. Sarnia had only three chances on the man advantage and was able to get a goal. Both Derek Todosichuk, who opened the scoring for London, and Jonathan Sims, who sent the game to overtime with seven minutes left, put in their first goals on the season for the Nationals. London will travel to Leamington to play the Flyers Thursday (Sept. 27), before they come back home to take on the St. Thomas Stars next Wednesday (Oct. 3).
