Beefeaters clean up at awards selection
London Community News
The London Beefeaters are doing more than just getting noticed in the standings as more than a handful of the team’s players were picked as 2012 Ontario Football Conference (OFC) award winners and all-stars during the coaches selection meeting in Guelph on Monday (Oct. 1).
Beefeaters’ kicker/punter Zack Medeiros led the way for London by being chosen as the Alex Stajic Memorial Special Teams’ Player of the Year, and as an all-star place kicker and punter. The 21-year-old finished the regular season as the statistical leader in scoring, kick offs, field goals and extra point converts.
Defensive End Garrett Heming earned the Defensive Rookie of the Year award, as well as being penciled in as an all-star defensive lineman after picking up 21 tackles and seven sacks on the season.
Nathan Caranci was chosen for the Offensive Lineman of the Year award—something a Beefeater hasn’t done in more than 20 years—as well as an all-star nod at his position.
First-year OFC head coach John Vouvalidis was named the Coach of the Year, guiding his team to a 7-1 record and helping London to their first home playoff game since 1990.
Wide receiver Josh Woodman, running back Kyle Woldenberg-Puyda and defensive back Ian Barrie were all selected to the all-star squad.
The Beefeaters will host the St. Leonard Cougars at TD Waterhouse Stadium on Saturday (Oct. 6) in the opening round of the playoffs. Kickoff is at 8 p.m.
