Catholic Central High School Crusaders were able to keep their perfect season intact and run the table of the Thompson Division after squeaking out an 18-16 win over A.B. Lucas Secondary School at the home of the Vikings in the last week of the Thames Valley Regional Athletics regular season on Friday (Oct. 26).
In such a low scoring rain affair the game had plenty of action with five lead changes throughout the matchup, but this was the least amount of points the Crusaders have put on the scoreboard after picking up an average of 39 points in their previous five games before playing the Vikings.
Catholic Central wouldn’t get their first lead of the game until the dying seconds of the first half when Alex Vanderhoff caught a five-yard touchdown to make the score 14-9.
A.B. Lucas would regain the advantage when Turtle Viana ran past the goal line to collect both touchdowns for his team in the game and put the Vikings up by two.
The Crusaders weren’t going to be outdone though, and Cameron Geddes put the finishing touches on the perfect 6-0 regular season for Catholic Central by kicking a 17-yard field goal and a punt that added the cherry on top.
The winning field goal off the foot of Geddes came at the start of the fourth quarter, but the second best defence in Tier 1, which only gave up 73 points all year, was able to hold on for the big win.
