It was a one-of-a-kind treat for local squash enthusiasts as two of the world’s top players dropped into the London Squash and Fitness Club on Wednesday (Jan. 30).
Fresh from competition at the JP Morgan Tournament of Champions, which was held Jan. 19-24 in New York Coty, number one ranked Ramy Ashour of Egypt and 15th ranked Alister Walker from Botswana, took to the courts of the Albert Street facility. Playing first with select members from the club and sponsors earlier in the day, the two took on some of the club’s up-and-coming junior talent before meeting on the main court before a packed house in the main event.
Ashour and Walker have meet five times in Professional Squash Association (PSA) sanctioned competition with Ashour recording the victory each time.
Wednesday’s friendly exhibition contest though didn’t quite stay within the lines of the record book with Walker coming out on top of this contest. Trading wins in the first two sets, Walker taking the first 11-5 and Ashour the second 11-8, it was the underdog Walker pulling out the stops over the next two sets with scores of 11-7 and 11-5 to seal the win.
