The Western Mustangs women’s hockey team had an opportunity to move into a tie for third place Sunday (Feb. 3) at Thompson Recreation Centre’s arena, but a 3-2 overtime loss to the Queen’s Golden Gaels only pushes them further away from the Kingston school.
Both teams traded shots in the opening two periods tied 1-1 with action going back-and-forth in the opening 40 minutes.
Despite the Mustangs having a 90 percent penalty kill, the Gaels Ontario University Athletics (OUA) leading power play found the back of the net in the final frame just before hitting the midway point on their fourth man advantage of the game.
Although it was Kryshandra Green’s penalty that the Queen’s scored on, the rookie forward redeemed herself with a tying goal with less than two minutes left in the game to send the matchup to extra minutes.
It didn’t take long into overtime for the third-place Gaels to secure their spot in the OUA standings after Danielle Girard scored three minutes into sudden death to give her team the win.
On Saturday (Feb. 2), Western beat the Waterloo Warriors 4-1 and headed into the weekend the Mustangs were ranked ninth in the Canadian Interuniversity Sports standings.
Western will travel to Oshawa to faceoff against the University of Ontario Institute of Technology on Saturday (Feb. 9) before hitting the road to Toronto to take on the York Lions on Sunday (Feb. 10).
