The Stepping Out Safely: Healthy Aging 2012 series is now into its third month and the focus of the program is shifting to physical activity for seniors.
Last Friday (July 6) a small but enthusiastic group came out to the Horton Street Seniors Centre to take part in a demonstration of a type of activity called Nordic walking, using a product called Urban Poles.
Based on the movements of cross-country skiing, the program is designed as a total body workout using 90 per cent of the muscles in the body.
“ I always say to my classes, if you smile while your doing it, then your using 100 per cent of them,” said instructor Tracy Ralph.
She pointed out that being a low-impact workout, it is ideally suited for older people and can also be adapted for rehabilitation from injuries as well as fitness.
