Members of London’s military families joined with the community at large in Springbank Park on Saturday (Sept. 23), participating in the fourth annual Strength Behind The Uniform five-kilometre walk/run.
Held as a fundraiser for the London Military Family Resource Centre (LMFRC), the event also helps connect military families with the local community while raising awareness of the centre at the same time.
With an estimated 1,000 active duty and reserve military families living in the London area, the LMFRC provides services and programs to both new and established residents. In addition to acting as a referral agency connecting new families to local services, the centre also provides a variety of programs including assisting those with a family member on active deployment, helping families moving to other areas and for parents with children in the military that may be stationed elsewhere.
In 2011, the Strength Behind The Uniform event raised approximately $9,000 and organizers hope better that total this time around with more than 200 people participating this years walk.
Organizers at the event also indicated this was the final Strength Behind The Uniform walk/run, with plans to change the format of this major fundraiser in 2013.
